The Ganga Expressway is a significant infrastructure project in Uttar Pradesh, designed to enhance connectivity between the western and eastern regions of the state. This greenfield expressway spans approximately 594 kilometers, linking Bijauli village in Meerut district to Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj district. The project is being developed under the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) model by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). Key Features of the Ganga Expressway: Length: 594 kilometers Operational Date: Expected by March or April 2025 Major Cities Connected: Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj Budget: ₹37,350 crores, including land acquisition costs of approximately ₹9,500 crores Travel Time Reduction: From 12 hours to approximately 6-7 hours between Meerut and Prayagraj Route and Structure: The expressway is designed as a six-lane, access-controlled highway, with provisions to expand to eight lanes in the future. It will feature two main toll plazas and 15 ramp plazas to facilitate efficient traffic management. Additionally, nine convenience complexes, including food courts and rest areas, are planned along the route to enhance commuter comfort. Progress and Timeline: As of February 2025, significant progress has been made, with 92% of geographical work and 98% of structural work completed. Overall, 71% of the construction is finished. The project faced delays due to restrictions imposed by the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR regions, affecting areas like Meerut, Hapur, and Bulandshahr. Originally slated for completion by December 2024, the operational date has been pushed to March or April 2025, post the Maha Kumbh Mela scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025, in Prayagraj. Phase 1 Route Details: The initial phase of the Ganga Expressway covers 12 districts, divided into 12 packages for streamlined construction. Each package encompasses specific stretches between designated villages across the districts, ensuring focused development and management. Features and Benefits: Airstrip: A 3.5 km long airstrip in Shahjahanpur district for emergency landings and take-offs by Air Force aircraft. Bridges: Construction of a 960-meter bridge over the Ganga River and a 720-meter bridge over the Ramganga River. Flyovers and Overbridges: 18 flyovers and eight road overbridges to facilitate smooth vehicular movement. Industrial Clusters: Designated zones along the expressway to promote industrial and economic development. Enhanced Connectivity: Seamless links to existing expressways like Purvanchal, Yamuna, and Agra-Lucknow, as well as direct access to the national capital from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
