UP Government Doubles PMAY-Rural Budget to ₹4,882 Crore for 2025-26

In a major boost to rural housing, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has doubled the budget allocation for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Rural scheme, setting aside ₹4,882 crore for 2025-26. This increase comes as part of a proactive push to enhance housing infrastructure for the underprivileged ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The scheme aims to construct 30 lakh houses for economically weaker sections in the upcoming fiscal year. Increased Budget for PMAY-Rural & Housing for All The Yogi Adityanath government has significantly increased funding for PMAY-Rural, doubling the allocation from ₹2,441 crore in 2024-25 to ₹4,882 crore in 2025-26. This move aligns with the Central Government s mission to provide affordable housing to all rural citizens. At the national level, the Centre has set a target to construct 4.95 crore rural houses by 2029, of which 36 lakh homes have already been built in Uttar Pradesh. The Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), a state-backed initiative supporting rural housing, has also seen a budget increase to ₹1,200 crore, compared to ₹1,140 crore last year. Nationwide Rural Housing Progress As of February 2025, the Union Rural Ministry has assigned a target of 3.79 crore rural houses for construction across States and Union Territories. 3.34 crore houses have already been sanctioned. 2.69 crore houses have been successfully built. These figures demonstrate significant progress but also highlight the remaining housing gap that PMAY-Rural aims to address. Additional Budget Allocations for Rural Development The UP government has also allocated funds for complementary rural development initiatives to enhance employment, infrastructure, and skill development. Key Budget Allocations in 2025-26: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS): ₹5,372 crore to create 34 crore person-days of employment. Rural Road Maintenance: ₹1,088 crore earmarked to enhance rural connectivity and infrastructure. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY): ₹427 crore to promote skill development and employment opportunities for rural youth.
