Water Taxi Service on Yamuna Proposed to Enhance Connectivity & Boost Real Estate Growth

A proposal for launching water taxi services on the Yamuna River has been submitted to the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) for review. This initiative aims to enhance inland waterways transportation and provide alternative connectivity options in Delhi. Water Taxi Project Proposal & Initial Phase Details During a transport secretaries' meeting on February 14, the proposal for the Yamuna water taxi service was introduced. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) suggested that in the initial phase, boats with a capacity of 20-25 passengers could be deployed. Key Project Considerations: A depth of 1 to 1.2 metres is required for the water taxis to operate efficiently. The river must undergo development and maintenance for tourism and recreational activities. A hydrography survey and traffic study will be conducted to assess feasibility before implementation. Yamuna River Revival & Previous Setbacks For several years, there have been discussions on reviving the Yamuna River for transportation and tourism. However, past plans faced challenges due to: Poor river conditions preventing navigation. Insufficient water depth for boat services. Environmental concerns regarding pollution and industrial waste. Before the Delhi assembly elections, the government promised major clean-up efforts, including: Zero industrial waste discharge into the Yamuna. Development of a Yamuna Riverfront, modeled after Sabarmati Riverfront. The Port, Waterway, and Shipping Ministry s proposal to construct two jetties along the river. These initiatives align with the broader goal of restoring the Yamuna and making it a functional waterway. NCRPB's Next Steps & Funding Consideration The NCRPB has instructed IWAI to: Submit a detailed feasibility study and comprehensive project reports. Provide a formal project proposal within two weeks. Once reviewed, the NCRPB will consider funding the initiative, paving the way for infrastructure development along the Yamuna River.
