HMRTC Proposes New Metro Corridor Connecting Faridabad and Gurgaon

The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC) is exploring plans to develop a new Metro corridor that will connect Faridabad and Gurgaon using a double-decker viaduct, in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The proposal was shared by Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal. The planned Metro route will span approximately 30.8 km , linking Sector 45 in Gurgaon with Bata Chowk on the Badarpur Escort Mujesar Metro line in Faridabad. The double-decker viaduct will feature a three-level transport system, with an existing road at ground level, a highway flyover above it, and the Metro rail operating on the top tier. Earlier, the HMRTC board had already approved a Metro connection between Rajiv Chowk and Panchgaon . Once completed, the overall Metro corridor is expected to extend to around 35 km and include 20 stations , enhancing regional connectivity. Additionally, the 28.5-km Metro project between Huda City Centre and Cyber City has been included under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti initiative . The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) . The Gati Shakti programme aims to strengthen infrastructure development across states and central ministries to improve connectivity and economic efficiency. The Haryana government also plans to approach the Delhi government for approval of detailed project reports (DPRs) and financial support for upcoming Rapid Rail Transport System (RRTS) corridors, including Sarai Kale Khan Shahjahanpur Neemrana Behror and Sarai Kale Khan Panipat . These projects are expected to promote eco-friendly public transport while supporting commercial growth across the National Capital Region (NCR). Kaushal highlighted a sharp rise in Metro usage in Gurgaon, with daily ridership increasing to 42,000 passengers in FY 2022 23 , compared to 8,500 passengers in the previous financial year. Metro revenue also witnessed significant growth, reaching Rs 34.24 crore in 2022 23 (up to January), as opposed to Rs 6.78 crore during the same period in 2021 22, which was affected by pandemic-related restrictions. To further boost passenger numbers, Kaushal directed HMRTC to set up a committee to assess strategies for improving ridership and strengthening last-mile connectivity. He also encouraged the corporation to enhance non-fare revenue by developing parking facilities, leasing spaces, and monetising advertising opportunities.
