Bharatmala Pariyojana: Objectives, Features & Impact on India’s Road Infrastructure

The Bharatmala Pariyojana is a major infrastructure initiative launched by the Government of India to improve and expand the country s road and highway network. It is a centrally funded programme aimed at strengthening connectivity, reducing travel time, and boosting economic development across regions. Introduced in 2017 under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the project focuses on creating a well-connected system of highways, economic corridors, and expressways. Its primary goal is to improve the movement of goods and passengers by addressing gaps in the existing road infrastructure. One of the key features of this programme is the development of economic corridors. These corridors are designed to connect major production centers, industrial hubs, and markets, helping to reduce logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiency. The project also includes feeder routes, inter-corridor roads, border roads, and coastal connectivity routes. These additions aim to ensure better access to remote areas, ports, and international borders, enhancing both trade and national security. Under the first phase of the programme, approximately 34,800 kilometers of national highways were planned for development. This includes both new road construction and the upgradation of existing highways to improve capacity and quality. A major objective of Bharatmala is to increase the number of districts connected by national highways and improve freight movement efficiency. The project aims to shift a larger share of goods transportation to highways, reducing congestion and travel delays. The initiative also promotes the development of supporting infrastructure such as logistics parks, tunnels, bridges, bypasses, and ring roads. These features are intended to provide seamless and faster travel across different parts of the country. In addition to improving connectivity, the project is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth. Better road networks can boost industrial development, create employment opportunities, and support regional development, especially in previously underdeveloped areas. Overall, Bharatmala Pariyojana represents one of the largest highway development programmes in India. By focusing on efficient transportation, reduced logistics costs, and enhanced connectivity, it plays a crucial role in strengthening the country s infrastructure and supporting long-term economic progress.
