The Gorakhpur Link Expressway is a significant infrastructure project in Uttar Pradesh, designed to improve connectivity between the eastern regions of the state and major urban centers. Spanning approximately 91.352 kilometers, this four-lane (expandable to six lanes) expressway aims to facilitate seamless travel from Jaitpur village in Gorakhpur district to Salarpur village in Azamgarh district, where it integrates with the Purvanchal Expressway. Project Overview Estimated Cost: The project is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹7,283 crores. Land Acquisition: Approximately 1,095 hectares (2,710 acres) of land have been acquired for the construction. Route: The expressway traverses through the districts of Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azamgarh. Key Features Design Specifications: The expressway features a 110-meter Right of Way (ROW), with provisions for a service road on one side in a staggered configuration to facilitate local access. Infrastructure Components: The project includes the construction of 2 toll plazas, 3 ramp plazas, 7 flyovers, 7 major bridges, 27 minor bridges, 16 vehicular underpasses (VUPs), 50 light VUPs, and 35 pedestrian underpasses to ensure safe and efficient movement. Public Amenities: Plans are in place to establish public convenience facilities at two strategic locations along the expressway for the benefit of commuters. Construction Phases The development of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway is divided into two main packages: Package 1: Extends from Jaitpur (Gorakhpur) to Fulwariya (Ambedkar Nagar), covering a distance of 48.317 kilometers. Package 2: Stretches from Fulwariya (Ambedkar Nagar) to Salarpur (Azamgarh), encompassing 43.035 kilometers. Progress and Timeline Initiation: The project was announced in 2018 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with land acquisition commencing in February 2019. Construction Milestones: As of May 2024, the project has achieved significant progress: 100% of earthwork completed. 95% of overall construction finalized. 337 out of 341 structures constructed. Operational Date: The expressway is slated to become operational by March 2025, aiming to reduce travel time between Lucknow and Gorakhpur to approximately 5 hours.
