Gurgaon s long-delayed Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) was expected to become operational by September 2016 after authorities cleared the final major obstacle affecting the project. The road was considered one of the most important infrastructure developments for improving traffic movement across the city. The 16-kilometre-long SPR connects Gurgaon-Faridabad Road near Ghata to NH-8 near Kherki Dhaula through Sohna Road. Once completed, it was expected to significantly improve connectivity for sectors 58 to 80 and reduce traffic pressure on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Officials stated that the road would create smoother travel links between Golf Course Road, Faridabad Road, Sohna Road, and NH-8. One of the biggest reasons for the delay was the rehabilitation of families affected by land acquisition at Rambir Ki Dhani. Around 16 oustees whose properties fell within the road alignment needed to be relocated before the final stretch of construction could be completed. Authorities conducted a draw of lots and allotted alternative plots in Sector 49, which helped clear the final hurdle and allowed work on the remaining 500-meter stretch to move forward. Officials aimed to make SPR operational by around September 15, 2016, after land clearance and construction work on the remaining section. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) stated that completing this stretch would help resolve long-standing commuting problems and improve overall traffic flow in New Gurgaon. The road was also expected to bring major benefits to the real estate market in Gurgaon. Since several residential and commercial projects were being developed along the SPR corridor, better connectivity was likely to increase buyer confidence and improve investment activity in surrounding sectors. Real estate experts believed the project would be especially beneficial for homebuyers because it would improve access from New Gurgaon to Delhi through Golf Course Extension Road. It would also strengthen connectivity toward Faridabad through the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road corridor, making the location more attractive for both end-users and investors. In early September 2016, authorities also removed multiple structures along the final alignment and made the road motorable, helping vehicles move across the full stretch. This marked a major milestone toward full completion and confirmed that the project was moving closer to becoming fully operational. The Southern Peripheral Road was seen as a major step toward solving Gurgaon s growing traffic challenges. With rapid urban expansion and rising pressure on existing roads, the project promised better transportation efficiency and stronger long-term infrastructure support for the city.
