The Smart Cities Mission is a major urban development initiative launched by the Government of India in June 2015. Implementation Strategy The mission is implemented using two major approaches: Area-Based Development (ABD) Focuses on improving specific areas within a city through infrastructure upgrades and redevelopment. Pan-City Initiatives Applies smart solutions across the entire city using technology-driven systems such as intelligent traffic management and digital governance. Each selected city operates through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which is responsible for planning, funding, and executing projects. Progress and Achievements The Smart Cities Mission has achieved significant progress since its launch: Over 90% of projects have been completed across selected cities Thousands of kilometres of smart roads and cycle tracks have been developed Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) are operational in all smart cities Smart classrooms, e-health centres, and digital infrastructure have been established These developments have improved urban management, transportation, and service delivery in many cities. Role of Technology in Smart Cities Technology plays a central role in the Smart Cities Mission. Tools such as: Internet of Things (IoT) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data analytics are used to manage traffic, monitor utilities, improve safety, and enhance public services. Integrated Command Centres act as the control hubs, enabling real-time decision-making and efficient coordination between different departments.
