MHADA to Conduct Structural Audits of 1,000 Cessed Buildings in Mumbai

In a recent review meeting, the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) assessed various projects under the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board. During the meeting, MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal directed the initiation of structural inspections for 1,000 cessed buildings in Mumbai, with completion targeted by the end of March 2025. Over the next year, approximately 13,000 cessed buildings across Mumbai will undergo structural audits by appointed consultants. These assessments aim to evaluate safety conditions and determine the need for repairs or redevelopment of aging and neglected structures. Understanding Cessed Buildings Cessed buildings refer to structures built before 1960, where tenants pay a cess or property tax to MHADA. These funds are allocated for repair and potential redevelopment by the Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board. Government's 100-Day Action Plan & Progress As part of the Maharashtra government s 100-day action plan, nearly 500 buildings will be audited by the end of March. So far, 171 buildings have undergone inspection, with reports for 32 already submitted. MHADA Vice President Sanjeev Jaiswal instructed executive engineers to issue notices under Section 79(A)(1)(A) and Section 91(A) to all 13,000 cessed buildings. Additionally, he directed officials to expedite the redevelopment process for properties acquired under Section 91(A).
