MHADA Fast-Tracks 17 Slum Redevelopment Projects in Mumbai

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced an accelerated approach to reviving 17 stalled slum redevelopment projects in collaboration with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). Officials have been directed to expedite key processes, including eligibility verification of slum dwellers, administrative approvals, and tendering, to ensure timely implementation. Reviving Stalled Redevelopment Projects in Mumbai MHADA and SRA are working together to restart slum redevelopment projects across various sites in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Among the 17 projects, eight have already been taken back from their original developers under Section 13(2) of the Slum Rehabilitation Act, following prolonged delays. All these sites are situated on MHADA-owned land, enabling direct intervention by the government to accelerate progress. 25,000 New Housing Units Planned Through this initiative, MHADA aims to create approximately 25,000 additional housing units, benefiting slum dwellers and project-affected residents. A comprehensive review of the redevelopment projects is being conducted to assess how many homes will be allocated to affected families. To maintain transparency and efficiency, authorities have been directed to remove ineligible slum dwellers from project sites to ensure that only legitimate residents benefit from the redevelopment. Key Redevelopment Project: Malvani Malad Among these projects, Malvani Malad stands out as the largest redevelopment initiative, aiming to resettle 14,000 slum dwellers. Biometric Survey: To streamline the process, a biometric survey of all residents is being conducted. Increased Manpower: Additional personnel have been deployed to speed up data collection and verification. Infrastructure and Road Connectivity Improvements Some redevelopment sites currently lack proper access roads, which has caused project delays. To resolve this issue, authorities are implementing urgent measures to improve connectivity and facilitate smoother project execution. A structured timeline has also been introduced for biometric surveys across all slum dwellings on MHADA-owned land, ensuring a systematic and timely redevelopment process.
