Maharashtra to roll out online tenant verification system next month

The Maharashtra State Registration Department plans to implement an online system to streamline the tenant verification procedure. By the end of February 2025, data from the state's 1,130 police stations will be incorporated into the registration department's database. This invention eliminates the need for tenants and landlords to visit police stations for verification. The new method would link the registration department's e-registration platform to police stations in 44,000 communities. This improvement means that tenant verification may be completed entirely online, making the process more efficient. This online verification system was intended to go live last year but was delayed due to technical concerns. Recently, the Pune district government published guidelines mandating rural property owners to report renter information to local police stations. Owners must include the tenant's name, address, photograph, two references, and e-registered documents. This order is intended to monitor the huge floating population in industrial zones. Although online tenant verification systems were previously working in Pune's metropolitan regions, they became inactive for an extended period of time due to technical issues. Every month, around 85,000 to 90,000 leave and license agreements are e-registered in Maharashtra. Currently, this process is managed using an Excel sheet. The updated online system will demand extra information, such as a tenant's residence history over the last five years and their permanent address. Once put into effect, the technology will provide police stations with direct access to e-registration data for verification purposes. This shift will save time and eliminate the need for in-person visits. To ensure a smooth implementation, state officials are attempting to connect village-level data to police station records. This idea has been well received by representatives from the real estate business. They believe that online verification will inspire more landlords to electronically register their tenant agreements rather than relying on informal testimonies. The online verification system also provides a secure and transparent way for police to verify tenant information. This approach is likely to benefit landlords and tenants alike by streamlining the verification process and ensuring that all rental agreements are correctly documented. With this digital linkage, the State hopes to make tenant verification more accessible and reliable.
