Dwarka Expressway Construction Work to Begin Soon: Key Details
The Dwarka Expressway was planned as an important road infrastructure project to improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram and reduce traffic pressure on existing routes. In April 2018, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that construction work on the expressway was expected to begin within a month.
The project was discussed as part of several infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving transportation and reducing congestion in Gurugram.
Rs 7,000 Crore Project Announced
At the time of the announcement, the proposed Dwarka Express Highway was described as a 17-km-long project, with an estimated investment of around Rs 7,000 crore.
The expressway was expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurugram, particularly those using heavily congested roads.
Focus on Reducing Traffic in Gurugram
The project was presented as one of several measures being undertaken to address traffic congestion in Gurugram.
The proposed expressway was expected to improve movement between residential areas, commercial hubs and major highways. Better connectivity was also expected to support the rapidly developing areas along the route.
Other Infrastructure Projects
During the same announcement, several other road projects were also discussed.
One of these was the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which involved significant land-acquisition expenditure and was being developed to divert heavy traffic away from Delhi.
A proposed flyover at Shankar Chowk on NH-8, near Ambience Mall, was also mentioned. The project was estimated to cost around Rs 170 crore and was intended to improve traffic movement around the busy junction.
Importance for Gurugram
The Dwarka Expressway was expected to become an important connectivity corridor for Gurugram. It was planned to provide an alternative connection towards Delhi while linking with major roads and highways in the region.
For residents and businesses, improved road connectivity could make daily commuting easier and strengthen access to employment centres, residential developments and commercial areas.
Impact on Real Estate
The proposed infrastructure development also attracted attention from the real estate sector. Areas located around the expressway were witnessing residential and commercial development, and improved connectivity was expected to increase their accessibility.
However, infrastructure announcements and property-market outcomes are not the same thing. Buyers should separately check the actual operational status of roads, local infrastructure, project approvals and property documents before making a purchase decision.
Project Progress Over the Years
The Dwarka Expressway project faced several delays related to land acquisition and other implementation issues. The project later progressed significantly. The 19-km Gurugram section became operational on March 11, 2024, while the Delhi section formed part of the remaining work at that stage.
Therefore, the 2018 statement that construction would begin “within one month” should be treated as a historical announcement, rather than a current project update.
Conclusion
The Dwarka Expressway was conceived as a major connectivity project for the Delhi-Gurugram region. In 2018, the government announced that construction was expected to start shortly, with the project intended to reduce congestion and improve road connectivity in Gurugram.
Over the following years, the project underwent several changes and delays before major sections were completed and opened to traffic.
