BBMP Achieves 88% of Property Tax Target for FY2024-25, Takes Strict Measures to Meet Full Goal

Bangalore s civic authority, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has successfully collected 88% of its property tax target for the financial year 2024-25. With Rs 4,600 crore already collected out of the Rs 5,210 crore target, the BBMP is intensifying its efforts in the final month of the financial year to recover the remaining dues. BBMP s Strategies for Meeting Property Tax Collection Goals To ensure complete tax collection, BBMP has implemented strict measures against defaulters, including: Seizure of 9,000 properties belonging to tax defaulters. Attachment of 83,000 bank accounts linked to these defaulter properties. Auctioning of over 600 properties to recover unpaid dues. These actions come as a response to the failure of the one-time settlement (OTS) scheme, which had aimed to encourage defaulters to clear dues by waiving penalties and interest. Targeting Commercial Property Tax Evasion To further enhance property tax compliance, BBMP is collaborating with Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) to identify tax fraud cases. Many property owners who have commercial electricity connections have wrongly registered their properties as residential to reduce tax liabilities. BBMP s Plan for Identifying and Correcting Tax Evasion: Cross-verification of BESCOM commercial electricity records with property tax registrations. Bringing 2-3 lakh previously excluded properties under the tax net. Revising tax assessments to ensure fair property tax contributions. Property Tax Target for FY2025-26 Set Higher For the next financial year (2025-26), BBMP has set an even higher property tax collection target of Rs 5,600 crore. Increased tax revenue will allow for: Improved civic infrastructure in Bangalore. Better public services and urban development projects. Stronger enforcement of tax regulations to prevent future evasion. With strict measures and data-driven tax enforcement, BBMP is working towards maximizing property tax collections, ensuring a fair and efficient system for taxpayers while strengthening Bangalore s urban infrastructure.
